This Sunday concluded the 15th annual Kalamazoo Kick-Off Classic. Over 120 teams attended in one of the first major competitions of the season.
The first division was juvenile and the competition was close. After a strong fight from many teams, Team Elite pulled out ahead. This year marks the team’s second year competing. Skokie Valley Starlights took second and received a 5/3 majority, moving up from last year’s sixth place finish. Dazzlers took third place followed by the Fond Du Lac Blades.
The results were even closer in the junior division for the short program competition. St. Louis Synergy took the gold medal in both the short and long, with a score of 44.62 and 89.37 respectively. In the short program, less than a point separated St. Louis Synergy from its competitors Hockettes took the silver medal with a score of 43.28. The Starlights won the bronze medal in the short with a score of 38.90. Chicago jazz took the pewter in the short and silver in long with a score of 38.75 and 82.63 respectively.
Team Elite was the gold medalist in pre juvenile group B as it received four first place ordinals. Fond Du Lac Blades took the silver, Cleveland Edges took bronze, and Dazzlers took pewter. In group A, Starlights took the gold medal.
Only four teams competed in the senior short competition this weekend. Adrian College scored 49.53. Starlights took the gold medal in the short program scoring 49.43 points. Crystallettes took a close silver in short, but pulled ahead of Starlights in the long program, winning the gold medal with a score of 102.14. Newcomers Team Del Sol won the silver in long scoring 85.64, and Starlights took bronze with a score of 84.14.
Novice was a large division this weekend. Starlights won another gold medal– one of the club’s eight medals earned this weekend. The novice team scored 64.71 points, and last year’s champions, the Crystallettes, took the silver, scoring 60.00 points. Team Del Sol won the bronze with a score of 57.20 and Chicago Jazz took pewter and scored 53.98.
The Dazzlers came out on top in the intermediate division with a score of 50.77, followed by Crystallettes at 50.61. Ice diamonds won the bronze medal scoring 46.79, and the Fond Du Lac Blades took the pewter medal with a score of 46.52. Less than a point separated third from fifth.
Western Michigan’s Collegiate team won the gold medal in the collegiate division scoring 65.43, followed by Adrian College’s team who scored 56.29. The Starlight’s Adult team displayed their program in an exhibition.
Sunday’s competition focused on the up and coming skaters. Prelim, six Beginner events, and two Open Juvenile events made up the morning.
