by Dana Murphy, Dazzlers Coach
The Dazzlers made a mark on synchronized skating in a big way during the 2013-2014 season. Their Intermediate team earned a spot to 2014 Synchronized National Championship and claimed the title of National Champions; the first title for the club and second national medal.
While their big sisters were “invading the world” with their alien invasion inspired program, the Dazzlers Open Juvenile teamed claimed gold and Pre-Juvenile team grabbed silver at the Midwestern Championships.
You can call the Dazzlers a family affair. They have always practiced exclusively out of the Downers Grove Icearena in Downers Grove, Illinois. The Dazzlers started as an ISI Precision team in the early 1980’s and by 1985 had two teams, Adult and Youth. By 2000 Dazzlers had their first US Figure Skating level team, Junior Classic. Since then, they haven’t stopped growing
This season will feature seven teams, consisting of 111 skaters: Beginner 1, Beginner 2, Pre-Juvenile, Open Juvenile Silver, Open Juvenile, Juvenile, and Intermediate.
Their coaching staff is made up mostly out of women that grew up skating at Downers Grove Icearena and were Dazzlers themselves. The Synchronized Skating Coordinator, Barb Foltz, coached many of the current coaches during their competitive years. Foltz, who has worked with the Dazzler organization for over 30 years, feels that this has led to a higher level of dedication.
“As we grew, it took a lot of commitment on the part of the coaches and the rink. The learning process of how to best prepare the teams for competitions was a continual process. We have accomplished much for a small organization,” says Foltz of her club.
Their home-spun charm has attracted skaters from Chicago and all of its suburbs along with southern Wisconsin and Northwestern Indiana through the years.
In the spirit of growth, the Dazzlers hope to continue to add more lines, possibly even Junior in the coming year. Please contact us at (630)971-3780 or check our website for tryout information starting in early 2015.
The Dazzlers would like to wish all teams the best of luck this season!
