The 2018 Colonial Classic will take place on Friday, January 5th through Sunday, January 7th. This is a highly anticipated event as it is the first competition of the new year. There will be many teams competing in the IJS divisions, and they are sure to bring their best since this is the last major competition before the Eastern and Midwestern/Pacific Coast Sectionals. Even though the event is taking place on the east coast, there are teams coming from all over the country to compete. The competition has changed venues this year and is being held at the same arena as the 2012 US Synchronized Skating Championships, the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts.
The first IJS event is the novice flight, starting at 2:59 pm on Saturday. The division consists of Ice Mates, Team Delaware, Synchroettes, Mirror Image, DC Edge, Skyliners, Team Image, Philadelphia Symmetry, Teams Elite, and Team Ashburn. Reigning national novice champions the Skyliners are fighting for the gold medal with their “Phantom of the Opera” program. Teams Elite’s “Lady Gaga” program is a fan favorite; it will be tough competition after winning the division at the Dr. Porter Classic in December. Team Image will also be a contender after winning the 2017 Cape Cod Classic with its powerful “Wonder Woman” theme.
At the event, the reigning US National Champions, The Haydenettes, will be exhibiting their “Underground” senior free skate. They will take the ice at 4:49 pm. Following will be the junior short event, featuring Philadelphia Symmetry, Team Excel, DC EDGE, Synchroettes, and Lexettes. After representing the United States at the World Junior Championship last season, the Lexettes will be top contenders with their lively “Nashville” short program. Veterans in the division, the Synchroettes, will be looking to make their mark with their performance. And newcomers DC EDGE, Philadelphia Symmetry and Team Excel will be looking to shake up the division.
Finishing the day and the largest IJS division will be the intermediate event, with 15 teams competing. This large division will include DC EDGE, Team Excel, Precisely Right, Wisconsin Edge, Mirror Images, Central Park Ice, Teams Elite, Team Image, Star Mates, Synchro Stars, Richmond Synchro, Skyliners, Team Delaware, Team Ashburn, and Icing on the Cape. the Skyliners were the 2017 intermediate national champions and are looking for another win with their “Addams Family” free skate. Teams Elite placed second at Dr. Porter Classic last month and are looking to entertain the crowd and win a medal with their creative “boxers” routine. Star Mates’ “Moana” program will also be one to watch after winning the Cape Cod Classic last month.
Starting off the competition on Sunday at 11:00 am is the juvenile event, which will include The Colonials, Team Delaware, Philadelphia Symmetry, Ice Liners, Mini Mates, Synchroettes, Team Excel, Teams Elite, DC EDGE, Skyliners, and Team Image. Teams to watch will be DC EDGE’s “Wonder Women” program and Mini Mate’s “Beetlejuice” program. Both teams finished first and second, respectively, at the Cape Cod Classic.
The junior free skate will begin at 12:30 on Sunday. The order for this event will be available Saturday evening after the draw.
Capping off the IJS divisions will be the adult division, starting at 1:18 pm. Teams competing in this event are Gotham City Synchro, Team Image, Esprit de Corps, The Colonials, and Ocean Blades.
This is going to be a very exciting and competitive event. Teams are sure to bring their best as these results could be similar to the outcome at the upcoming Eastern Coast Sectional. If you are unable to attend this competition you can follow along with the results on our Twitter page, @GICresults.
