“Toughness is in the soul and spirit, not in muscles.” –Alex Karras
Yesterday we arrived in Toronto for the Junior World Championships. Upon arrival, we walked to a nearby restaurant to snag some lunch. The highlight of our meal was watching the World Dart Championship showing on tv and having french fries. We returned to the hotel to rest, make a gift for our fellow Team USA members, and have dinner before our first practice in Canada. Despite being a little tired from a day of travel, we did two solid run-throughs and worked on cleaning up some sections.
Today, we woke up, had breakfast, and went to video review. Video review helped us clarify a few details to make sure that we were prepared for our practices for the day. At our first 20 minute practice, we worked on the short program. Despite a couple stumbles, we gouda (credit to Laura Xu for today’s fun word insert). We then went back to the hotel for our signature sandwich lunch. Following lunch, we returned to the Hershey Centre for our second practice of the day; this was our first practice on the competition rink. It was exciting to skate on the freshly painted ice and get a feel for the arena. After practice, we returned to the hotel for dinner and a Team USA meeting with our team leader, doctor, coaches, and other US officials. At this meeting, we also gave our gifts to the Skyliners. They really appreciated receiving our hand-decorated picture frames.
As we write this, we are looking forward to having two more unofficials tomorrow in preparation for the start of competition on Friday. It has been really exciting to see all the teams around the hotel and to have gotten the chance to watch a few other teams during their practices. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the week has in store!
