At our end of the year banquet last spring, Esprit de Corps Head Coach Dede Wilson reminded the gathering of Adult, Masters and Open Adult skaters and supporters that adult synchronized skating is a unique experience. Certainly, she was referring to the scarce opportunities in any sport to continue to or begin to compete at a high level as an adult, but she also alluded to the community to which we belong. While we gathered that evening to celebrate the on-ice achievements of last season, we also celebrated our synchro family.
Like our younger counterparts, skaters in the adult divisions develop bonds with teammates that transcend the skills honed on the ice. Time spent with teammates and apart from family, co-workers, and non-skating friends breaks down barriers, creates community, and deepens friendships. Just as we share the triumphs and trials on the ice, we share triumphs and trials off the ice.
This summer, our special connection meant that a group of past and present Esprit skaters celebrated the wedding of a long-time veteran of our of adult line. The skaters at the wedding joined Esprit de Corps after years of involvement with over 25 other synchronized skating programs. Esprit teammates know that new jobs, graduations, weddings, and new babies are to be celebrated as much as much as a medal-winning performance. Esprit teammates know that personal heartbreak and loss need to be nursed and processed like a disappointing skate. Esprit teammates know that we are teammates by chance but friends by choice.
In addition to the on-ice power, agility, and grace of our sport, this choice, this celebration, and this support is what is unique about being a part of adult synchronized skating. We come from different backgrounds and levels of experience to form teams to fill three divisions of adult skaters who love our sport and adore our teammates. Esprit de Corps is proud to be a part of this unique community.
Esprit de Corps was established in 1986 by Shirley Holdsworth who remains involved as a revered and beloved mentor. Initially, EDC fielded only an adult line but as the sport and its popularity has grown, so has our organization. We will proudly field three lines for the 2013-2014 season.
Esprit de Corps Adult is the 2013 U.S. National Gold Medalist and 2013 Eastern Sectional Gold Medalist. In their 28 year history, EDCA has won 10 U.S. National Championships and 24 Eastern Sectional Titles.
Esprit de Corps Masters are the 2013 U.S. National Gold Medalists. In their 12 year history, EDCM has won 7 U.S. National Championships and 7 Eastern Sectional Titles.
Formed in 2005 to compete in the US Figure Skating Open Adult division, Esprit de Corps Open Adult (EDCO) continues to build their own competitive history to complement that of her sister teams.
