Day 2 in Finland….
Wednesday morning we woke up to a rainy and grey Helsinki. Even with the dreary weather, we felt refreshed after having a good nights sleep and ready to start another busy day. We headed downstairs to breakfast where we were surrounded by athletes and coaches…it definitely felt like the competition atmosphere! We had a short meeting with our Team Leader, Doctor and our fellow Team USA teammates Miami University before heading out to do some sightseeing and shopping. Despite the rain, it was great to get out and explore the city. Luckily for us, our coach Saga and her sister were leading us and had lots of suggestions for where to shop and what to see. After breaking off into smaller groups for shopping and exploring, we all ate lunch together at a small café downtown. The café offered a great selection of pasta and other delicious foods- perfect to reenergize us before our evening practices. Happy with our purchases and time out of the hotel, we headed back on the train to prepare for practice.
We did our hair and make-up and before we knew it, it was time to take the shuttle to the rink. We felt ready to skate and perform after a restful and fun day together. The first practice was held on the unofficial surface where we had practiced Tuesday night. We started with a Short Program run through and then continued with many strong sections. We felt confident and satisfied with our skate. Miami University practiced after us. We cheered loudly for them when they took the ice and then stayed to watch their practice.
When Miami was finished skating we walked to the Official Arena to hang out and wait for our second practice of the day. We were able to watch some of the other teams and relax a bit before warming-up to practice again. Our second practice felt great. We skated sections of our short, focusing on details and consistency.
We arrived back at the hotel rather late and tired after a long day. We had a short video review session and then ate dinner with Miami before heading back to our rooms for the night. All in all, Day 2 in Helsinki was great! We had a lot of fun and two great practices. Now it’s time to sleep and prepare for another packed day ahead.
Until tomorrow…Good night!
