This weekend, over 70 teams will travel from all across the country to compete in seven IJS events at the 22nd Annual Dr. Richard Porter Synchronized Classic. Hosted by the Ann Arbor Figure Skating Club, the competition takes place from December 1st to 3rd.
Kicking off the division is the junior short program on Friday, December 1st. The junior free skate will take place the following evening; nine teams will compete for the Porter Classic title. 2017 National champions Skyliners look to continue their strong season after coming off a large 12 point win at the Anaheim Classic in early November. Starlights also had a strong showing at the Anaheim Classic and look to improve their standings from last year’s Porter Classic. Chicago Jazz, who claimed first place at Kalamazoo are also key contenders in this division. DC EDGE and Northernettes are new to the mix this year.

Following the junior division is the senior event with five teams competing. Skyliners led the senior division at the Anaheim Classic by nearly 13 points and hope to give another strong showing this weekend. 2017 World Team members Crystallettes look to uphold their Porter Classic championship title, and Miami University and Adrian College also look to medal yet again at this year’s event.

The novice division is the first event on Saturday. Skyliners, who led the novice division at the Boston Classic by over 13 points, aim to earn another Porter title. Teams Elite are coming off a 7-point win at Kalamazoo and hope to earn another medal. Other high-scoring teams to watch include the Dazzlers and Crystallettes.

Six teams compete in the adult division. 2017 National champions DC EDGE and last year’s Porter champions hope to claim another gold medal this year, while the 2017 National silver medalists Crystallettes hope to edge them out for the title. Infinity-Onyx and United Ice will be joining the competition this year.

Starting events on Sunday is the always massive intermediate event, which is split into two groups of 12 teams. In group A, Teams Elite, Crystallettes, and Skyliners are the only teams to break 60 points this season, proving themselves as strong contenders for first place. In group B, the Starlights and Capital Ice Chips are key teams looking to medal.

Following intermediate is the collegiate division. The University of Michigan led the competition at Kalamazoo by 12 points and look to uphold their Porter title yet again. Adrian College placed first at the Diamond Classic in early November and second at Kalamazoo and are strong medal contenders. Miami University and the University of Delaware are also key medal contenders.

Concluding the competition is the juvenile event. Teams Elite and Starlights had great showings at Kalamazoo and look to continue their strong seasons. Team Delaware had a solid performance at the Boston Classic and hope to medal once again. The Hockettes and Saint Louis Synergy are also medal contenders.
