We started the day off strong with a great short program official practice, and then headed back to the hotel to finish getting ready! Just before lunch, our friend from the college, Special Events Coordinator Lesley Carson, led us in relaxing yoga. This was a pre-competition first for us, but it left us feeling calm, refreshed and ready to go!
After lunch, we watched the opening ceremonies and the junior short program event, where we cheered on Chicago Jazz. Seeing them have a great skate only boosted our confidence as we began to warm up for competition. One of my favorite parts of the day was stepping on the ice and hearing the crowd, our families, and friends cheering “USA, USA, USA” for us.
As we set the program, my teammate Jenna and I squeezed hands, and we knew we could do it. We knew we could push ourselves and put out a wonderful program. I was ecstatic when we heard our score and found out where it placed us. It was our season’s highest short program score to date, and we earned some of our highest technical calls. We had been working especially hard on our moves element and no hold, and to see the hard work pay off was so rewarding.
It was a truly amazing day, and the icing on the cake was finishing in 5th! We are excited and confident for the long program tomorrow. We are honored to compete in the final group of the competition, among tough competition such as Team Surprise from Sweden, and our Team USA teammates Miami University. Wish us luck! 🙂
