by Shannon Jahrling from the Lexettes Junior
After a long night sleep, the Lexettes woke up and had our first Finnish breakfast, surrounded by different teams from all different countries. After finishing up, we hurried to get ready for our first unofficial practice, sewing in our buns and clipping our red crystal- flower hairpieces in. Before we left, we had a quick Team USA meeting where we got better acquainted with our Team Leader and Team Doctor. After taking a quick team picture, we hurried off to the rink.
Our first practice this morning went great, we had lots of energy and worked mainly on our long program. We went through each element and focused especially on sharp arms and having lots of facials. After we were done with our first 20-minute unofficial practice of the day, Coach Saga told us to hurry up and take off our skates so we could get a quick bite at Stockman (a large department store in Helsinki). We were all amazed at how huge this store was, with more than eight floors!
After our quick bite to eat, we had to get back to the rink to have our second unofficial practice in the rink we’ll be competing in. It was really exciting to see where the huge crowds will be tomorrow when we compete our short. With only an hour between our second practice and the opening ceremonies most of us did a bit of shopping in the rink.
Once we settled into our seats at the opening ceremonies, we were entertained by the countless performances including circus performers, local synchro teams, singles and pairs skaters. Once the entertainment was all done we had the draw to pick the order that we would be skating in for tomorrow’s short program. We picked to skate 20th, the last of the Junior Teams tomorrow. We are all very pleased about our skating order.
We ran very quickly to catch one of the first shuttles back to our hotel so we could eat our buffet dinner and then go straight to a video conference room to review today’s skating. We reviewed both what we did well, and also small reminders on what will make our elements even better. Coach Saga reminded us that she is very proud of all that we have done this season, and that being here is already an amazing accomplishment in our skating career.
We’re off to bed now so that we can be all ready to skate great tomorrow! GO USA!!!
The Lexettes have officially landed in Finland, and we are beyond excited to start our journey here! This being our first worlds as well as the first “official” Junior Worlds makes us all even more excited!
After having practice midday Tuesday, we shortly took the bus to Logan to get on our long flight to Frankfurt, then from Frankfurt to Helsinki, Finland, arriving here at around 2:00pm. Despite the jetlag, we quickly got ready at our hotel and headed to the rink. After looking at the big arena where we’ll be competing, we warmed up, laced our skates, and headed to the unofficial practice ice for a forty-five minute practice. Coach Saga and Coach Sam were very pleased with our practice, as were we. Before we were able to go to dinner (we were all SO hungry!) we watched the tapes of our practice in the conference room. We were all very happy with how we skated today, so we will use the next couple practices to put the finishing touches on everything.
We are all so excited to represent the United States at Junior Worlds, some of us can’t even believe this day is already here! Even though its only 8:30pm here I think we’re all going to get some sleep so we can be all ready for our practices and opening ceremony tomorrow! GO USA!
