History: The University of Illinois Synchronized Skating program began in 2001. Over the past 10 years, we have added an Open Collegiate team to our existing Collegiate team, and most recently, we transitioned our two teams into Senior and Collegiate. This expansion into new divisions is consistent with our mission to “achieve continuous growth, individually and collectively, in an inclusive environment that fosters unconditional respect and support.” Helping propel the organization forward is our excellent coaching staff. Audrey Kamm, 5 year coach of IllinoiSkating, is a 2005 Miami graduate. She helped coach the Collegiate team to their first medal in 2007 and a second place finish at Nationals in 2009. She is the Head Coach of the Senior team and Assistant Coach for the Collegiate team. Shawna Ludy, new to IllinoiSkating this season, comes to us from the Haydenettes. She skated with the Haydenettes, coaches the Mini Mates, trained the Lexettes, and coached University of New Hampshire. Shawna is the Head Coach of Collegiate and the Assistant Coach for Senior.
In addition to coaches, the team is managed by a student- run Executive Board. The board consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Junior Executive Board Member. This elected group of students work on all administrative aspects of the organization, from booking travel arrangements to creating budgets, from planning fundraisers to reserving practice ice. Serving on the board offers skaters an opportunity to have a leadership role on their team. Outside of the Executive Board, there are many other ways for skaters to develop in both life skills and skating skills. All of our skaters are full time college students and to us, that comes first. In having to balance the rigorous schedules of skating and school, our members learn effective time management skills. We also promote continual individual improvement. Our skaters continue testing Moves, Dance and Freestyle throughout their four years at Illinois, with many passing Senior tests before they graduate. We are proud to say that IllinoiSkating alumni are well-rounded, successful young women who are well-equipt to enter the professional world.
