Strongsville, Ohio bustled with synchronized skaters, parents, coaches and officials over the past four days. Coaches College began on Thursday with seminars on rule changes, elements, step sequences, judging and calling. The event was the most interactive in the six year history of the program, requiring coaches to view video, discuss and determine what level and grade of execution to award each team. Many videos of competitors from the 2011 World Championships were utilized to provide solid examples of successful elements and sequences. Discussion turned towards new elements frequently such as the traveling, weaving circle and the new group lifts for senior. Coaches had the opportunity to watch the DREAM skaters perform new elements and step sequences in person as well as participate in an on-ice session to improve skating skills.
Skaters arrived on Friday evening for a Broadway themed opening reception full of energy and excitement. Skating sessions began on Saturday morning. Eight teams including Annie, Legally Blonde, Wicked, Lion King, Mamma Mia, Hairspray, Jersey Boys and Grease spent 12 hours learning from the most experienced coaches in the country. Each Team USA coach choreographed one team’s program for the Sunday night exhibition and taught additional sessions on turns, features, edges, field moves, interpretation and transitions. Skaters also participated in off ice sessions such as artistry in motion, performance execution, team building and yoga.
